VxWorks port to industrial Intel chips
The VxWorks RTOS has been ported to Intel's industrial edge AI chips, including the Atom x6000 Series and Intel Pentium and Celeron N and J Series processors and 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors.

Wind River has ported its VxWorks real time operating system (RTOS) to Intel’s Atom x6000 Series (above) and Intel Pentium and Celeron N and J Series processors and 11th Gen Intel Core and Celeron processors.

The development is part of a multi-year effort to optimize Wind River software for Intel industrial system-on-a-chip offerings (SoCs) says the company, which was owned by Intel for nine years until 2018.

The demand for edge AI is pushing the need for support for features such as Time Coordinated Computing (TCC), Time-Sensitive Networking and Functional Safety in the industrial chips.

“We are moving towards a more automated intelligent systems world, with IoT devices generating vast amounts of data at the edge. The right software is needed to securely capture and process real-time machine data with digital feedback from countless intelligent edge systems,” said Avijit Sinha, Chief Product Officer at Wind River.

VxWorks is part of the Wind River Studio, which the company has been pushing as a low latency, cloud-based, end-to-end system. It points to its internal research that shows 66 percent of companies believe their embedded products/solutions need to be capable of computing in near-latency-free real-time.

“With Studio, we now offer an end-to-end solution spanning the needs of dynamic and compute-heavy IoT applications, from development to deployment. Working closely with Intel, Wind River is providing an RTOS made for the demanding operational needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The deal is being extended into avionics with the same 11th generation Tiger Lake processors.

“Based on the success of this partnership, Wind River is working on supporting Tiger Lake and Ice Lake for our avionics safety-certified Wind River Helix Virtualization Platform,” said Sinha.

“Next generation applications, such as those for Industry 4.0, will require greater AI and real-time capabilities for critical applications for demand high-speed processing, computer vision, functional safety, and low-latency deterministic computing,” said Christine Boles, Vice President, Internet of Things Group and General Manager, Industrial Solutions Division at Intel. “Together with Wind River’s support for VxWorks and ACRN on Intel’s IoT-optimized platforms, it allows customers to quickly add new features, get new products to market, and deliver world class performance with virtualized, real time compute.”

The Intel Atom x6000 Series and Intel Pentium and Celeron N and J Series Elkhart Lake processors are aimed at IoT applications with integrated resources for remote management, functional safety, TSN network synchronization, and real-time computing.

The 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors include GPU compute with integrated AI acceleration, plus real-time capabilities for critical applications that demand high-speed processing, computer vision, and low-latency deterministic computing.
