Flex Logix has sold its embedded FPGA assets to Analog Devices (ADI), which has also hired the technical team.
Flex Logix had been selling its low power EFLX and InferX embedded FPGA IP for artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) designs, having also developed an AI/ML chip. It had licensed the technology to over 40 companies including MorningCore in China. The technology can be used on process nodes from 180nm to 7nm, including the low power 22nm FD SOI process from Global Foundries said the company in 2023.
The deal is already done. “We have worked with our customers to ensure they are taken care of,” said the company. The move is likely to see the technology added to the ADI low power MAX microcontrollers which also have hardwired ML accelerators to provide more flexibility.
The deal also comes as Intel is set to spin out its Altera FPGA business to take advantage of the boom in AI. The embedded FPGA market has also been improving, with Renesas Electronics launching a range of low density ForgeFPGA devices following its acquisition of Dialog Semiconductor, and TI last month launching its own range of programmable logic.
“There are a very small number of people in the world that have built multi-billion dollar companies in semiconductor IP – founding Rambus CEO and now Flex Logix CEO Geoff Tate is one of them,” said Ajay Royan, Founder and Managing General Partner of Mithril Capital, which led the Series D round of financing in 2021. A further round of $4m in 2022 brought the total raised since 2014 to $89m. The details of the deal were not disclosed.
