Fifth generation BMS for Iveco electric vans
Potenza Technology has developed a fifth-generation wired battery management system (BMS) initially for volume production of Iveco vans in 2024.
The BMS, on display at the Cenex-LCV show in the UK this week, is based on the Texas Instruments with current monitoring chips from Analog Devices and supports both 400V and 800V battery packs, monitoring up to 192 cells. The TI chip has sufficient performance to implement the monitoring the battery chemistry, and the BMS is chemistry independent, says Richard Devenport, General Manager & Head of Engineering at Coventry-based Potenza.
The design system is fully compliant with ISO 26262 ASIL C standards, significantly reducing upfront vehicle development costs and Potenza is adding over the air (OTA) update capabilities. Potenza is aiming to sell this as an off the shelf system to other OEMs.
Based in the UK with European production facilities, Potenza is wholly owned by Iveco Group’s multinational powertrain developer, FPT Industrial.
“As specialists in powertrain solutions for electrically powered vehicles, Potenza Technology knows first-hand the importance of cost-effective innovation for vehicle manufacturers to succeed in the increasingly competitive mobility space,” said Devenport.

“From the system itself to our manufacturing strategy, our solution is fully scalable. We have the capability to manufacture volumes in the hundreds all the way up to 50,000 units – allowing us to support the niche vehicle industry and mass market to accelerate the development of e-mobility solutions that meet customer needs, both now and in the future.”
Potenza is now scoping out its sixth generation BMS systems, particularly whether aI algorithms will be run locally or in the cloud.
