Porotech selects foundry PSMC to make GaN-on-Si microLEDs
Poro Technologies Ltd. (Cambridge, England) has partnered with Taiwanese open foundry Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) for the mass production of GaN-on-silicon microLEDs on 200mm-diameter wafers for display applications.
Poro, which trades as Porotech, said that working with PSMC is the next step in the commercialization of displays for high-volume, low-cost consumer display applications.
No timetable was given for the production of microLED chips for incorporation in displays (see Foxconn selects Porotech for microLED displays).
“An exciting road lies ahead with PSMC, propelling tremendous opportunity of commercialization with our mutual partners and customers with collective triumph and significant growth in the MicroLED revolution,” said Tongtong Zhu, CEO and founder of Porotech, in a statement.
Porotech’s PoroGaN platform is capable of chips that emit light across the full visible spectrum of colours using a single GaN material system.
PSMC has established an “open foundry” business model that integrates with clients’ special device and process demands to provide differentiated foundry solutions rather than a standard process platform.
