UK memory startup appoints Graphcore’s Toon to board

Nigel Toon, CEO of AI processor company Graphcore Ltd. (Bristol, England), has joined memory startup Intrinsic Semiconductor Technologies Ltd. (London) as an independent director.

Intrinsic, is a 2017 spin-off from University College London, that is creating non-volatile memory based on the movement of oxygen vacancies in silicon-oxide and similar materials. As such the company is following a similar path to Weebit Nano Ltd.

Graphcore is in the process of being acquired by Japan’s SoftBank Group to be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Intrinsic says that Toon is “currently CEO of Graphcore.”

Intrinsic notes on its website that Toon helped Graphcore raise more than US$700 million in funding.

In an article published on Linkedin Toon said that Intrinsic has “started to make some big commercial breakthroughs..” Toon added that Intrinsic’s ReRAM could start to become available soon.
