Elbit Systems UK is extending its experience with the Watchkeeper large drone programme to adapt and develop smaller systems in the UK.

Following a restructure, Elbit Systems UK will compete for specific drone programmes that are emerging, working with Qinetiq and the Aviation Systems Group (ASG).

Led by Elbit Systems UK, the team will include the Joint Venture UAV Tactical Systems (U-TacS) team, based in Leicester that delivers Watchkeeper to the UK military. This team will undertake system integration, through-life support, and through-life management, combining this with best-in-class sub-systems and technologies.

Elbit Systems has a range of fully integrated fixed wing and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) systems in multiple classes such as the Skylark. The team will work with a wide range of suppliers in related disciplines including platforms, payloads, communications, and processing to refresh the technologies in the drones.

Qinetiq also has a long history of drone development, from the earliest versions of the Zephyr solar power High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) systems to machine learning in small drones.

Last week Elbit announced the sale of its Ferranti power systems division in Manchester to TT Electronics as part of the re-structuring.

“Elbit Systems UK has been a pioneer, and is now well established in delivery, evolution and support of integrated UAS capability to the UK MOD. Team Elbit will leverage the successes and expertise of all the partners, to meet future requirements with best-in-class technology from our Team and a broad range of suppliers,” said Martin Fausset, CEO of Elbit Systems UK.
