Offered as next-generation ultrasonic fingerprint solutions, the Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors build upon the company’s previous Snapdragon Sense ID fingerprint technology. New and enhanced features include sensors for display, glass and metal; detection of directional gestures; and underwater fingerprint match and device wake-up.
According to Seshu Madhavapeddy, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, the new sensors “can be designed to support sleeker, cutting-edge form factors, unique mobile authentication experiences, and enhanced security authentication.”
The Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor for Display is offered as the first commercially announced multi-functional ultrasonic solution capable of scanning through OLED display stacks of up to 1200 um, while the Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Glass and Metal are the first to scan through up to 800 µm of cover glass and up to 650 µm of aluminum, respectively. Previous-generation sensors were limited to 400 µm of glass or metal.
The sensors are available as both an integrated solution for Snapdragon mobile platforms, as well as standalone sensors that can be used with non-Snapdragon platforms. The sensors, say the company, “provide OEMs and operators with the ability to offer truly distinct, differentiated devices with added value on truly groundbreaking new devices.”

The Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Glass and Metal are expected to be available to OEMs immediately, and are expected to arrive in commercial devices in the first half of 2018. The Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor for Display is expected to be available for OEMs to evaluate in the fourth quarter of 2017.
