TSMC’s sales decline is modest in May
May sales at foundry TSMC were down year-on-year by 4.9 percent while for local rival United Microelectronics Corp. they were down 23.1 percent.
TSMC’s small annual fall is an improvement on the 14.3 percent fall recorded in April while UMC’s position has deteriorated from a 19 percent annual sales fall in April. The broader market expects a weak 2Q23 but with the prospect of a return to growth in 3Q23.
TSMC (Hsinchu, Taiwan) announced sales of NT$176.54 billion (about US$4.58 billion) for May. This was a 19.4 percent sequential jump. Revenue for January through May 2023 totalled NT$833.07 billion (about US$21.59 billion), a decline of 1.9 percent compared to the first five months of 2022.
UMC’s May sales were NT$18.79 billion (about US$486.93 million). UMC’s year-to-date sales were NT$91.45 billion (about US$2.37 billion). This figure is down 17.3 percent on the first five months of 2022.
