VividQ raises £11m for holographic displays
The latest investment round for VividQ was led by Innovation Platform (IPC) from the University of Tokyo, who are joined by Foresight Williams Technology, a joint collaboration between Foresight Group and Williams Advanced Engineering, Japanese Miyako Capital, Austrian APEX Ventures and Silicon Valley’s R42 Group.
This brings the total VividQ has raised to over £17m ($24m) in equity funding with existing backers Sure Valley Ventures, University of Tokyo Edge Capital (UTEC), Essex Innovation and angel investors.
The investment will scale operations across the US and Asia and expand the team in Cambridge.
ividQ is developing real-time Computer-Generated Holography that uses depth information from software or cameras coupled with an RGB light source that modulates the wavefront of light with extreme precision, creating a holographic projection. Towards the end of 2021, the company plans to show a holographic Head UP Display (HUD) for automotive OEMs and a headset concept for augmented reality (AR).
Next year the company plans to show a laptop scale holographic display using standard LCD panels in combination with VividQ’s algorithms for a complete 3D display without the need for glasses.
“Our team has taken the technology that used to require immense amounts of computing power and found solutions to implement Computer-Generated Holography across consumer electronics,” said Darran Milne, Co-Founder and CEO of VividQ. “This new investment allows us to complete the next, critical phase of implementation projects and supports further innovation efforts to bring holography to new display applications.”

VividQ has the potential to change how humans interact with digital information,” said Dr Hermann Hauser, an angel investorr in Cambridge and co-founder of Amadeus Capital Partners.
