In an interesting move, supercomputer chip developer SiPearl is working with Intel to use its Ponte Vecchio GPU chip and oneAPI software stack.
SiPearl is designing the microprocessor for European supercomputers so that the region is not dependent on external technology. The deal with Intel will combine SiPearl’s Rhea chip with Intel’s first discrete graphics processor, Ponte Vecchio, for a high-performance heterogeneous HPC compute node.
To enable this combination, SiPearl will port lntel’s open unified software stack, oneAPI, to the ARM-based Rhea chip. Rhea has 72 ARM Zeus cores and is expected to be built on a 6nm process at TSMC next year.

“We welcome this collaboration with Intel, whose GPU Ponte Vecchio, optimized for HPC workloads, is a great engineering innovation. A solution incorporating our European HPC CPU Rhea with the Intel Ponte Vecchio GPU under the unified programming model oneAPI allows us to rapidly develop heterogenous nodes to meet the needs of European exascale supercomputing,” said Philippe Notton, SiPearl’s CEO and founder.
Intel has pitched oneAPI as an open, standards-based programming model to increase developer productivity and workload performance by providing a single programming solution across the heterogenous compute node. The pairing will also underline the value of CXL standardization in connecting compute elements, providing lower latency, coherent connectivity relative to PCIe connections.

SiPearl is working with 27 European partners from the scientific community, supercomputing centres and leading names from the IT, electronics and automotive industries which are its stakeholders and future clients.
