Cooling fans fit in 3- and 2-mm thicknesses
Mobile products now host multi-core processors, and cooling is more critical than ever. Sunon, with a 32-year history in innovation in the miniature cooling field, is creating various "thin and light cooling fan" series. These measure 30 x 30 x 3 mm to 8 x 8 x 3 mm, in addition to products of 2mm thickness or below that can be custom-made.
Traditional fans are 0.6-cm minimum thickness. They have a large interior space and use washers, retaining rings, and other necessary parts. Moreover, they fix the fan in place and enable it to rotate using silicon steel and magnets which supply magnetic lines of force. With slim cooling fans, however, thickness is significantly reduced to 0.4cm or smaller and their internal space is greatly reduced. As no washers and retaining rings are used and magnetic lines of force become insufficient when rotating, known problems with “thinned” fans are include blade run-outs, blade loosening, and ineffective dust blocking. All these will impact the cooling efficiency, even endangering the product’s service life, and Sunon believes it has overcome all of these issues.

IP68 fan versions
Sunon fans are now available in IP68 version. For use in harsh environments, they are protected against heavy dust and incoming water. Three models are already available and have had UL/TUV certification. To achieve the IP68 certification level, Sunon engineers developed a complete potting process coating for the motors of the IP68 fans, whereas usual models have glue coating or conformal coating. This specific moulding process covers 100% of the stator, coil, circuit and wire with shaped resin, protecting the system from dust and water intrusion. Anti-rust treatment (salt spray protection) is also available as an option.
Several tests have been conducted with success under extremely dusty and wet conditions: 8 hours under a maximum depression of 2 kPa, 1 hour under 1m of water. These fans are intended for harsh environment applications, such as outdoor telecom, solar farms, inverters, factories, onboard automotive, and outdoor LED lighting. Three models are already available: 80 x 80 x 25 mm, 80 x 80 x 32 mm, 92 x 92 x 25 mm, with voltage from 12 to 48V, and airflow from 50 to 75 cfm.
